Chiropractor Carbondale on Pharmacogenetics

An article in Science News Daily (April 11, 2011, “Pharmacogenetics Testing Offers Way to Reduce Deaths from Drug Toxicity”) discusses the field of pharmacogenetics (also called pharmacogenomics,) the study of an individual’s variation in DNA sequence related to drug response.

Putting a foreign substance such as a psychotropic drug into the body disrupts the body’s normal biochemistry, and can be considered as the introduction of an unnatural and toxic substance into the body. These drugs “work” by changing the normal functions of the body: they speed them up, slow them down, dam them up or overwhelm them. This is why there are side effects with psychiatric drugs.

Forensic psychiatrist Dr. Yolande Lucire (in her paper “Psychotropic Medication and Cytochromes”) makes these statements:

“Since 1994, a substantial number of papers have been published in major refereed medical journals on Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs). The ballpark estimate is that each year 2.2 million Americans are hospitalised for ADRs and over 100,000 die from them. These are simply adverse reactions to drugs, which are often but not always, unpredictable, and appear only in the fine print of prescribing information.

“Psychiatric drugs have hardly rated a mention, as psychiatric side effects in psychiatric patients have been routinely missed or dismissed by the pharmaceutical companies with ‘It’s the disease, not the drug, doctor.’

“With the drugs used in psychiatry, (and this is very general,) many are metabolised in the liver by an enzyme system called cytochrome P450 (and other cytochrome systems). There are genetic, biological differences between individuals, some of whom do not produce certain cytochromes at all. In practice this means that somewhere between 12 and 20% of Caucasians cannot metabolise certain drugs, for example, SSRIs, at all or they do it slowly. [Cytochrome means "cellular pigment" and is a protein found in blood cells.]

“The following drugs are only a few of the scores that use the cytochrome P450 system for their metabolism: alcohol, nicotine, cannabis, amphetamines, Amitriptyline, Celebrex, Cipramil, Lexapro, Codeine, Valium, Warfarin, Dilantin, Efexor, Feldene, Brufen, grapefruit, Luvox, Aropax, Prednisone, Prozac, Serzone, Risperdal, Tegretol, Voltaren, Zoloft and Zyprexa.”

One of the possible conclusions to be drawn from this emerging area of research is that the toxic effects (side effects) of psychiatric drugs in the body can be significantly multiplied in a large proportion of individuals who lack this ability to effectively metabolize and deal with these toxins.

Dr. Lucire’s research points to the result that persons with abnormal P450 metabolism who are given psychiatric drugs may reach a level of toxicity within hours or days which correlates with the onset of intense and harmful side effects.

The psychopharmaceutical industry has expanded its influence far beyond its ability to be effective, if indeed it ever was. One must also always keep in mind that while these drugs have been repeatedly shown to be not only ineffective but also harmful, the real underlying problem is that psychiatrists fraudulently diagnose life’s problems as an “illness”, and stigmatize unwanted behavior or study problems as “diseases,” combined with the profit-motives of pharmaceutical companies vying for a piece of the resultant psychiatric “treatment.” Psychiatry’s stigmatizing labels, programs and treatments are harmful junk science; their diagnoses of “mental disorders” are a hoax – unscientific, fraudulent and harmful.

Chiropractor Carbondale with the Celiac Support Group

Tomorrow evening Dr. Bird will be the guest speaker for the Southern Illinois Celiac Support Group. Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition which causes a sufferer who consumes products containing gluten to have a toxic reaction like an allergy attack. Below is a health report on gluten in America’s food products.

TRACES OF WHEAT FOUND IN 20% OF FOODS LABELED WHEAT-FREE

Vol. 8 Issue 58

As much as 20% of foods claiming to be “wheat-free” actually contain a detectable amount of wheat proteins according to new research.

The new study found that one-fifth of common grocery foods labeled wheat-free or gluten-free contained significant amounts of wheat proteins—which poses potential health risks to people with wheat allergies.

Researchers at the Food Allergy Research and Resource Program at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln tested 140 different food samples purchased from a grocery store to determine the effect on people with gluten sensitivity or wheat allergies.

A variety of products were tested, including those likely to contain wheat (gums, alcohol, soy sauce, vinegar, and malt liquors), and a variety of products labeled “wheat-free.”

Researchers found that 16% of the products tested contained wheat proteins; 20% of the products labeled wheat-free actually contained wheat proteins.

All of the malt products were found to contain wheat proteins; however, none of the alcohol or gum products contained wheat.

Fifteen percent of non-wheat products, such as chicken bouillon, corn cereal, and caramel ice cream topping, contained traces of wheat. Researchers noted that it entered foods during precessing from cross contamination.

“Caution must be taken when eating foods labeled gluten-free,” according to Ashly Lardizabal, lead author of the study and graduate student at the Food Allergy Research and Resource Program at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

Researchers suggest, based on the results of their study, that patients with gluten sensitivities should avoid wheat starches, malt syrup, or extracts.

WORKPLACE WELLNESS: GOOD FOR EMPLOYEES AND GOOD FOR BUSINESS

As volunteers for the Foundation for Wellness Professionals we provide wellness and disease prevention programs free of charge, here’s an article about the benefit of wellness programs in businesses.

Volume 14 Issue 144

A survey of CEOs has found that “healthier employees” is the number one reason why companies implement health promotion programs. Numerous studies show that improving employee health can have a direct financial return on investment by lowering health care costs, lowering absenteeism, and increasing employee productivity.

Anti-obesity programs often result in the most significant and immediate improvements for both employees and the business. Weight loss among obese employees has the potential of positively influencing spouses and children, significantly reducing an organization’s participating health care costs. For example, obese people spend 77 percent more on medications than the non-obese.

Obesity is associated with numerous serious health conditions, including hypertension, Type II diabetes, stroke, heart disease and certain types of cancer, which contribute to higher health care costs for employers. High obesity rates in the US directly raise health care costs and lower employer profits. Employers spend $13 billion annually on the total cost of obesity, and 9.1 percent of all health care costs in the country are related to obesity.

Obesity also reduces productivity, for two related reasons. The first is obvious: chronic absenteeism due to various chronic illnesses associated with obesity. But “presenteeism” is also a serious factor – the cost of lost productivity due to employees actually coming to work and producing far below job requirements because of health and other personal problems.

Potential benefits to employers of an employee health and wellness program are:

* Reduced cost for chronic diseases
* Decreased absenteeism
* Reduced employee turnover
* Improved worker satisfaction
* Demonstrated concern for your employees
* Improved morale

Potential benefits to employees are:

* Greater productivity
* Reduced absenteeism
* Improved fitness and health
* Greater social opportunities and support within the workplace

Other benefits that can result from a successfully implemented obesity prevention program include improved employee morale, better worker retention and improved recruiting of new employees

HEADACHES ARE MOST OFTEN CAUSED BY NECK PROBLEMS

June 5th through June 11th is National Headache Awareness week. Here is an article describing one of the most common causes of headaches and how chiropractic care and eliminate the cause and in turn the headaches.

Vol. 1 Issue 37

According to the front page of the “Life” section in the Toronto Star… “Chiropractors were right. Many headaches are caused by damaged structures in the neck – and scientific evidence proves it.”

The article interviewed a Toronto physician, Peter Rothbart, who concludes:

“We have been about to find an anatomical and physiological cause for many headaches. We’ve found damaged structures in the neck, and have gone on to prove they are the cause of the pain.
“We couldn’t believe it at first. We’ve been able to put together a scientific explanation for how neck structure causes headaches…”

In the past medical doctors have scorned the idea that neck problems cause headaches when it was suggested by chiropractors. But Rothbart says they will accept the anatomical research results.

Rothbart says doctors can check different bones in the neck to identify exactly where the problem is…If it is a structural problem that will respond to spinal manipulation, Rothbart refers the patient to a chiropractor to have it fixed.”

New Mobile Devices Present Serious Challenges to Health of Youth

Came across this interesting article about “text neck,” take a look…

New Mobile Devices Present Serious Challenges to Health of Youth

Vol. 14 Issue 51

Go anywhere that young people gather and take a look around. You’ll see a high number of them engrossed in mobile devices: cell phone applications, electronic reading devices, iPads, MP3 players, portable video games and texting, texting, texting.

One of the results from all this electronic interaction is that the number of young people suffering from upper back and neck disorders is increasing right along with the use of these devices. More and more of them are starting to complain about neck pain, headaches, shoulder pain and numbness and tingling in upper extremities.

If you look at a young person texting or using one of these other items, you can immediately see what is causing the problem: the person sits for long periods with the head flexed forward. This position reverses the natural curve of the neck and upper spine and can quickly lead to degenerative changes. And since a change in any one part of the spine affects the whole body, negative effects to the lower spine, lung function, and gastrointestinal function are likely to follow. Teens and young adults using these handheld electronic devices for long hours are also putting themselves at risk of developing arthritis at an early age.

Chiropractic care is the perfect remedy for correcting these problems, but in this case in particular, education is a vital part of the solution. Anyone sitting in a “forward head position” for hours each day must learn other ways of sitting so they can achieve improvements from Chiropractic care and prevent further damage.

Unfortunately, use of these devices proves to be addictive for some youth. It may take excellent education on the structure of the spine and upper body to show these youth exactly why it is important to change their habits to prevent painful health problems. That is why an educational session with the family Chiropractor is a very good thing to schedule for anyone at risk for “text neck.”

When the texting or mobile-device-using person learns how their posture and the condition of their spine affects their pain, comfort and overall health, they can make better choices. And when their customary posture is corrected, Chiropractic care can then do its job, restoring the normal curve to the spine and preventing degenerative changes that could be permanent.
