DC 0 to 3

Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood, Revised (DC:0-3R)

Your future generations are in peril. Your children are at risk from psychiatric fraud and abuse.

The Zero To Three organization first published DC:0-3 in 1994 to classify what they called “mental health and developmental disorders” in the first four years of life (ages 0 to 3.)

Like the fake “psychosis risk syndrome” we’ve discussed before, they extoll the virtue of diagnosing and treating infants from birth to age 3 for mental disorders, or treating them pre-emptively for the potential to develop a mental disorder at a later age.

Gag me!

Here are some of the “mental disorders” for which an infant can be diagnosed and given psychiatric drugs:

- Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (e.g. any emotionally stressful condition)

- Prolonged Bereavement/Grief Reaction (e.g. losing a primary caregiver)

- Separation Anxiety Disorder

- Sleep-Onset Disorder (frankly, I never wanted to go to bed that early)

- Night-Waking Disorder (we used to call this either hunger, thirst, or “dreaming about the bogeyman”)

- Sensory Food Aversions (e.g. refusal to eat certain foods)

We don’t know about you, but we’ve never met an infant (especially ourselves) that did not exhibit one or more of these symptoms at one time or another. We grew out of it; we presume, with proper medical and parental attention, that the vast majority of infants recover normally as well.

The current revision, DC:0-3R, is supposed to help mental health and other professionals recognize mental health and developmental challenges in young children, and of course provide a rationale for prescribing psychiatric drugs and other psychiatric treatments, not unlike the psychiatric billing bible, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) but specific to infants.

This is really happening, folks. Your children are at risk.

We suggest you express your outrage to your local, state and federal officials. Show the CCHR DVD documentaries to your schools, churches, doctors, newspapers, legislators, and so on — wherever you have an opportunity. If you need a copy of a CCHR DVD to play for others, let us know. A donation to help us spread this information around would be helpful.

What are the alternatives to a child’s restless dreams of the bogeyman? Given that the very first alternative to psych drugs is No-Psych-Drugs, one suspects that there are any number of natural alternatives.

Because if an infant or child gets hooked on psychiatric drugs, the bogeyman dreams may be a lot more difficult to manage.

Forest Lab Lawsuit

Forest Labs Settles Some Psych Drug Suicide Suits

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch published an article on Saturday and Sunday, October 30 and 31, 2010, describing fallout from Forest Pharmaceuticals’ guilty plea to illegally marketing antidepressants to children.

“A month after its Earth City [St. Louis, Missouri] subsidiary pleaded guilty of illegally marketing antidepressants to children and adolescents, Forest Laboratories is now settling a string of wrongful death and personal injury lawsuits from the parents of children who took the drugs Celexa and Lexapro.”

“Fifty-four lawsuits, mostly involving suicides and attempted suicides by teenagers in various parts of the country, accuse the New York-based pharmaceutical company of concealing a negative pediatric study on Celexa, duping physicians about the drug’s clinical trials, and targeting children in aggressive promotions of Celexa and a sister drug, Lexapro.”

“In vivid detail, the complaints allege that children under the influence of Celexa and Lexapro committed acts of suicide and violence.”

Weight Gain With Children

WEIGHT GAIN, OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS CAUSED BY MEDICATIONS GIVEN TO CHILDREN

November 13, 2009 — More research appears to confirm recent results of a large, prospective cohort study that the use of atypical antipsychotics (AAPs) increases the risk of significant weight gain and varied metabolic changes in children and adolescents with mental illness and behavioral disturbances. According to Dr. Panagiotopoulos, a growing body of evidence in adults demonstrating that AAPs cause significant weight gain, hyperlipidemia, and insulin resistance has raised concerns among the medical community in general, and the psychiatric community in particular, about whether these drugs may increase the risk of premature cardiovascular disease in children and adolescents. Chiropractic care for young children

STUDY SHOWS CHIROPRACTIC FOR YOUNG CHILDREN SAFE AND EFFECTIVE

Volume 14 Issue 99

Scientists at the University of Rochester have taken a new step toward understanding how Acupuncture works at the molecular level to ease pain.

A 3-year retrospective study of pediatric case files of Chiropractic treatments for young children and infants has revealed improvement with remarkably few adverse reactions, all temporary and very mild.

To perform the study, researchers pulled all the case files for pediatric patients younger than 3 years old, totaling 781 cases, at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic (AECC) in Bournemouth, England. Files were viewed manually and in sequential order, with no prequalification other than the target age group.

It was found that 697 children received a total of 5,242 Chiropractic treatments. Most of the young patients, about 73 percent, were 12 weeks of age or younger when they arrived for treatment.

Obviously, a 12-week-old infant cannot communicate about possible adverse effects. Parents were therefore consulted to help determine the effects of treatment. No parents reported a worsening of their child’s presenting symptoms, and only seven reported reactions, six of which were increased crying.

This translates to a reaction rate of approximately 1 child in 100. The actual rate of adverse reactions, says the study, would be about 1 case in approximately 1300 Chiropractic treatments.

There were no serious complications resulting from Chiropractic treatment, such as a reaction lasting more than 24 hours or severe enough to require hospital care. The reactions were short-lived — less than 24 hours — and had no effect on the usual activities of daily living, such as normal movement and mobility, nursing and eating.

Since it is well known that adults can have mild reactions to Spinal Manipulation Therapy (SMT), such as increased soreness, the researchers noted that it’s entirely possible that infants might experience the same type of reaction — even when pediatric SMT forces are reduced to match the patient’s size and weight.

The authors of the study say it is difficult to compare the reported adverse reactions risk assessment with already published work in the literature because there have been no similar studies. One systematic review showed a very low risk of severe reactions to Pediatric Chiropractic care — nine cases in a 30-year period.

Also, the authors note that it is difficult to precisely compare pediatric adverse effect rates to those of adults, as the negative side effects experienced by adults are different. In adults, the range of temporary and mild side effects is reported to include local discomfort, headache, tiredness, and radiating discomfort — information impossible to obtain from the youngest patients, which were in the majority.

Similarities with reported infant side effects were that the discomfort occurred the same day or one day after treatment, and lasted a short period — less than 2 days in adults and less than 24 hours in infants. In adults, 11 percent of those with an adverse effect experienced loss in activity of daily living, whereas none was reported in the infants.

The report says more research is required into adverse effects in all age groups of children. But with 85 percent of parents reporting an improvement, and only seven reporting adverse effects, and those being very mild and short-lived, the safety of Chiropractic treatment for infants and children appears to be well under control.

Meds in Jails

Psych Meds In Jails

“A ground-breaking, year-long investigation by Youth Today has uncovered ample evidence that many youths incarcerated in American juvenile facilities are getting potent anti-psychotic drugs intended for bipolar or schizophrenic patients, even when they have not been diagnosed with either disorder.”

“Ken Kramer, a researcher with the Citizens Commission on Human Rights of Florida, obtained detailed annual Medicaid expenditures for the five most prescribed atypicals in 30 states. In 2003, Medicaid spending on the atypicals for adolescents in those states was about $238.7 million. Kramer found that by 2007 – the year Abilify became the first to gain approval for adolescent use – spending had more than doubled to $562.4 million.”

“It is clear that in at least some states, atypical anti-psychotics have become a major part of the medical protocol in juvenile facilities, and prescriptions for the drugs are tied to a wide range of diagnosed conditions.”

Childhood Obesity

OBESITY: AMERICA’S NEW CHILDHOOD EPIDEMIC

Volume 14 Issue 83

Obesity is a serious health concern for American children and adolescents. The rate of increase in obesity statistics among American children and adolescents is trending sharply upward. With no real solutions being implemented, childhood obesity could reasonably be called an epidemic.

In the period from the mid-1970s until 2008:

Obesity more than doubled, from 5 percent to 10.4 percent among preschoolers aged 2–5

Obesity tripled, from 6.5 percent to 19.6 percent among 6–11 year olds

Obesity nearly quadrupled, from 5 percent to 18.1 percent among adolescents aged 12–19

Childhood obesity is not being targeted because obese children are teased or unpopular. Childhood obesity is a medically relevant epidemic because it is the stepping stone to life-threatening illnesses, including serious cardiovascular conditions like high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Furthermore, obesity is the common precursor for Type 2 Diabetes, itself an epidemic in America.

The 2007–2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) estimated that 17 percent of American children and adolescents, ages 2–19 years, are obese.

Another important, and often overlooked, factor is that obese children and adolescents are far more likely to become obese as adults than non-obese children. A study found that 80 percent of kids who were overweight at 10–15 years old were still obese adults at 25.

Another study found that 25 percent of obese adults were overweight as children. And when being overweight began before 8 years of age, adult obesity was even more serious.

Obesity in children is measured using different Body Mass Index (BMI) categories than those used for adults. Overweight and obesity in children and adolescents are age- and sex-specific, because children’s body compositions vary as they age, and also vary between boys and girls.

When the words “overweight” and “obese” are used correctly by health professionals, they mean that the BMI categories for children have been applied correctly:

“Overweight” means a BMI at or above 85 percentile and lower than the 95 percentile

“Obese” means a BMI at or above the 95 percentile

For kids, and for parents who are in charge, it all comes down monitoring diet and exercise. The diet has to be nutritious for growth and health, but it must not contain more calories than a child burns off during normal activities. When calories exceed activity levels, you can expect to see overweight. And a long-term, unhandled overweight condition can lead to morbid obesity.

Missouri Pharmaceuticals Pleads guilty

09/23/2010 “When in doubt, tell the truth.” Mark Twain, 1835–1910

Forest Pharmaceuticals pleads guilty

Forest Pharmaceuticals, an Earth City, MO drug maker, has agreed to plead guilty to federal criminal and civil charges and pay more than $313 million to resolve allegations that it made drugs without FDA approval, marketed an antidepressant for pediatric use, and gave kickbacks to doctors for prescribing these harmful drugs.

Forest Pharma, a subsidiary of New York based Forest Labs, signed a plea agreement to settle, among other charges, the illegal promotion of the antidepressant Celexa for children, and causing the submission of false insurance claims for the antidepressants Celexa and Lexapro.

The settlement alleges that Forest misled doctors and consumers by failing to disclose a European medical study that determined Celexa was ineffective for pediatric use. Lexapro is the company’s main money maker, with sales of $2.3 billion in fiscal year 2010.

Celexa (citalopram) and Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate) can cause suicidal thoughts or actions in children.

Recognize that the real problem is that psychiatrists fraudulently diagnose life’s problems as an “illness”, and stigmatize unwanted behavior or study problems as “diseases.” Psychiatry’s stigmatizing labels, programs and treatments are harmful junk science; their diagnoses of “mental disorders” are a hoax – unscientific, fraudulent and harmful. All psychiatric treatments, not just psychiatric drugs, are dangerous.

Children in United States Potentially Misdiagnosed with ADHD

Study Finds Nearly One Million Children (KINDERGARTEN AGED!) in U.S. Potentially Misdiagnosed With ADHD

Nearly 1 million children in the United States are potentially misdiagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder simply because they are the youngest — and most immature — in their kindergarten class, according to new research by a Michigan State University economist.

Many ADHD diagnoses may be driven by teachers’ perceptions of poor behavior among the youngest children in a kindergarten classroom. But these ‘symptoms’ may merely reflect emotional or intellectual immaturity among the youngest students.
