MASSAGE THERAPY USE STEADILY INCREASING AND BENEFICIAL TO HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

More Americans are reaping the benefits from massage therapy, according to a recent study conducted by the American Massage Therapy Association.

According to the report, the number of adult Americans who reported getting one or more massages from a massage therapist in the past year had steadily increased.

Only eight percent of adults received a massage in 1997. In 2001, the number increased to 17%; and in 2002, the number reached 18%.

53% of adults reported getting massages for health-related reasons; 23% of adults who got a massage within the past five years did so for relaxation and stress reduction.

In addition, the survey also found 14% had spoken to their primary healthcare provider about massage therapy; 30% had been recommended by their physicians, and 27% were referred by their chiropractor.

Additional studies have found massages enhance health by effectively treating low back pain, help breast cancer survivors cope emotionally and physically, ease pain after bypass surgeries, and boost immune function, amongst others.
